The New York Mets have reopened trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates regarding outfielder Starling Marte, sources told Robert Murray.
While the two teams are discussing the two-time Gold Glover, a deal isn't currently believed to be close to being completed, Murray adds.
It's been nearly a month since a report surfaced claiming the two clubs had exchanged names in a potential Marte swap. One of the names discussed was Brandon Nimmo.
The Pirates have also reportedly fielded interest from the San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Texas Rangers for Marte.
The 31-year-old Dominican enjoyed his most productive season at the plate for the Pirates in 2019, hitting .295/.342/.503 with 23 home runs, 31 doubles, 82 RBIs, and 25 steals.
Defensively, the normally sure-handed Marte took a dip last season. He was a minus-9 in defensive runs saved and recorded the worst UZR (-7.6) of his eight big-league seasons.
At the end of November, with rumors floating around that the Mets had interest in Marte, he called potentially joining New York "a great opportunity."
