Report: Mets considering trading Lowrie, Familia

The New York Mets are trying to clear money to make other moves this offseason and are considering trading infielder Jed Lowrie and relief pitcher Jeurys Familia, reports The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

New York would likely package one or both of them with a low-cost player, such as first baseman Dominic Smith, to get a deal done, Rosenthal adds.

Brodie Van Wagenen acquired both Lowrie (two years, $20 million) and Familia (three years, $30 million) during his debut offseason as the Mets' GM last year.

The two players didn't perform well in the first year of their deals.

Lowrie only appeared in nine games due to an assortment of injuries, and he didn't record a hit. The 35-year-old was an All-Star with the Oakland Athletics in 2018 before signing with the Mets.

Familia finished with a 5.70 ERA and 4.88 FIP in 66 outings with a 6.3 BB/9 last season.

Before 2019, the 30-year-old Dominican was effective. The former closer saved 123 games with the Mets from 2013 to 2018, including a league-leading 51 in 2016 when he was an All-Star.
