Pete Alonso is taking home some hardware after his historic campaign in Queens.

The New York Mets first baseman has won the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year Award, the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced Monday.

Alonso, 24, set an MLB rookie record with 53 home runs in his first season with the Mets. His homer total led the majors in 2019.

"This is a hell of an honor," Alonso said, according to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com. "I just really feel blessed. I've got to say thank you to the New York Mets for giving me the opportunity right out of spring training and believing in me from Day 1.

"I'd also like to say thank you to my teammates, because without such an awesome group of guys to facilitate my development, I wouldn't have put together the season I did."

Alonso's memorable year also included a win at the Home Run Derby in Cleveland.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom was the last Mets player to win the award, doing so in 2014.

Atlanta Braves right-hander Mike Soroka finished second in voting behind Alonso, while San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. placed third.

Player Team 1st 2nd 3rd Points
Pete Alonso Mets 29 1 148
Mike Soroka Braves 1 25 2 82
Fernando Tatis Jr. Padres 2 20 26
Bryan Reynolds Pirates 1 6 9
Dakota Hudson Cardinals 1 1 4

Soroka, 22, went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA across 174 2/3 innings for the Braves. Tatis, meanwhile, posted a .969 OPS with 21 round-trippers in just 84 games; the 20-year-old's season came to a premature end in August due to a back injury.
