Report: Blue Jays could be open to trading Gurriel
The Toronto Blue Jays could be open to moving Lourdes Gurriel Jr. this winter, according to Scott Mitchell of TSN.
The team doesn't seem to be actively shopping its outfielder, but Mitchell adds the Blue Jays would be especially willing to part with Gurriel if a deal brings back the right starting rotation piece.
The 26-year-old is coming off a breakout campaign. Converting to the outfield during his second season in the majors after previously playing second base and shortstop, Gurriel authored a .277/.327/.541 slash line with 20 homers and six stolen bases over 84 games.
The Blue Jays signed him out of Cuba to a seven-year, $22-million deal that will keep Gurriel under contract through the 2023 season.
Toronto's starting rotation ranked 24th last season by FanGraphs WAR, and the club no longer employs Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, or Clay Buchholz.
