The 2019 Washington Nationals proved that age is just a number.
The newly minted World Series champions were the oldest team in the majors this season with an average age of 31.1 years, according to Jamal Collier of MLB.com. For pitcher Sean Doolittle, that fact made winning the title all the more sweet.
"There's a bunch of guys over 30 years old and according to the smartest people in the room you can't win games like that anymore," Doolittle said after Washington's Game 7 victory over the Houston Astros, according to James Wagner of the New York Times. "You need young, athletic, (and) controllable talent. We're really proud that we're the oldest team in baseball that just won the World Series."
The Nationals' roster featured a number of players who are 35 or older, including Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, Kurt Suzuki, and Howie Kendrick, along with league's oldest current player in 42-year-old Fernando Rodney.
The 33-year-old Doolittle also channeled his inner "Star Wars" fan to address those who thought Houston would win easily.
"We were very aware that (the Astros) were the team to beat and that we were the biggest underdog in Vegas in the last, what, 15 years," he said. "Han Solo says, 'Never tell me the odds.'"
