Former New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway will join Joe Maddon and the Los Angeles Angels as the team's pitching coach, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
The deal hasn't been finalized, according to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale, who adds the Mets still owe Callaway $1.05 million in salary next season.
Callaway, 44, parted ways with the Mets on Oct. 3 after two underwhelming seasons as the team's manager. He pitched five seasons in the big leagues, including two with the Angels, and was also a pitching coach in the Cleveland Indians organization from 2013-2017.
The Mets went 163-161 in their two campaigns under Callaway. They missed the postseason both years despite substantial free-agent investments in Wilson Ramos, Jeurys Familia, and Jed Lowrie this past winter, as well as trades for J.D. Davis, Robinson Cano, and Edwin Diaz.
Callaway will join an Angels staff led by new skipper Joe Maddon, who enters his first season with the club after L.A. dismissed Brad Ausmus following one campaign as manager. Ausmus led the Angels to a 72-90 record in 2019, their worst finish since 1999. Maddon served as L.A.'s bench coach during Callaway's tenure as an Angels pitcher from 2002-03.
