The New York Yankees were close to completing a deal for Toronto Blue Jays closer Ken Giles at the July 31 trade deadline, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
New York was apparently nearing an agreement that would have sent three prospects to Toronto for the right-hander, but the Yankees ultimately shied away. The prospects were not identified.
Giles has had an excellent campaign with the Blue Jays - 18 saves, 2.05 ERA, 14.93 K/9 in 44 innings - but has missed time due to a lingering elbow injury.
An MRI on July 30 revealed no structural damage, though the closer did receive a cortisone shot that sidelined him into the first week of August. He's appeared in only nine games since the trade deadline.
Giles took the loss in his most recent outing, as he allowed a two-run home run to Houston Astros infielder Abraham Toro in what was Justin Verlander's third career no-hitter.
The 28-year-old is entering his final year of arbitration eligibility and is slated to become a free agent after next season.
