Jon Gray's season is over.

In a surprising move, the Colorado Rockies announced the right-hander, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, will be placed on the 60-day injured list with a fractured left foot.

Gray said the pain stemming from a previous left foot injury returned and bothered him during an Aug. 8 start, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill.

Imaging conducted on his foot revealed a stress fracture, for which Gray is leaning toward surgery, Rill adds.

Gray said that if he does elect for surgical repair, it shouldn't affect his offseason or start to the 2020 campaign.

The 27-year-old has been Colorado's best starter this season, fashioning a 3.84 ERA and 1.35 WHIP while striking out 150 hitters in as many innings.

Colorado selected the contract of right-hander Tim Melville from Triple-A Albuquerque to make the start.
