The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired right-hander Mike Leake and cash considerations from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor-league infielder Jose Caballero.
Leake, who played his college baseball at Arizona State and now lives in the Phoenix area, is under contract through 2020 with a full no-trade clause. He quickly agreed to waive that clause to pitch near his home, allowing the D-Backs and Mariners to complete the trade moments before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Wednesday, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
He's owed about $18.5 million over the remaining guaranteed life of his contract through 2020. The contract also contains an $18-million mutual option in 2021 that can be bought out for $5 million.
The St. Louis Cardinals, the team that signed Leake to the deal in 2016, are on the hook for $4 million of his remaining salary, and Arizona will pay $6 million, according to John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM Arizona Sports.
The Cardinals dealt the 31-year-old to Seattle in the middle of 2017. This season, Leake owns a 4.40 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while allowing 10.1 hits per nine innings and an American League-leading 1.2 walks per nine in 137 innings. He's posted two complete games and took a perfect game into the ninth inning earlier this month.
Once in Arizona, Leake will presumably take Zack Greinke's rotation spot after he was traded to the Houston Astros on Wednesday in a blockbuster deadline deal.
Caballero, 22, has played for High-A Visalia this season. The Panamanian is hitting .268/.388/.396 with three homers, 12 RBIs, and 28 steals in 43 games while spending time defensively at third base, second, and shortstop.
