The Philadelphia Phillies have signed left-hander Drew Smyly to bolster their struggling pitching staff, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Smyly opted out of his minor-league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. He began the season with the Texas Rangers, but the veteran posted an 8.42 ERA in 51 1/3 innings before being released in late June. Smyly was successful early in his career, but he's struggled to bounce back from Tommy John surgery in 2017.

The Phillies reportedly scoured the market for pitching help, looking at the likes of Smyly, Madison Bumgarner, and Matthew Boyd.

Philadelphia's pitching staff ranks 13th in the National League with a 4.78 ERA. Aaron Nola is the team's only starter with an ERA below 4.00.

The Phillies carry a 50-47 record into their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, good for third in the NL East. They sit a 1/2 game back of the Milwaukee Brewers for the second wild-card spot.
