The Minnesota Twins placed right-handed starter Jake Odorizzi on the 10-day IL with a blister on his right middle finger, the team announced Wednesday.
The decision followed Odorizzi's subpar outing Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics, where he allowed six runs (five earned) in three innings of work, according to Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com.
"I think it's the right thing to bump him and get him ready for post-All-Star break games," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "We think he's going to be fine to make those starts after the break."
Scheduled to be an All-Star for the first time, Odorizzi is no longer eligible to pitch in Tuesday's Midsummer Classic. No replacement has been announced.
The 29-year-old opened the season on a roll. Over his first 13 starts, he went 9-2 with a 1.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 9.98 K/9. In four starts since, he's 1-2 with a 7.85 ERA and 1.69 WHIP and allowed at least four earned runs in three of those appearances.
The Twins recalled right-hander Zack Littell from Triple-A Rochester to take Odorizzi's place on the roster. Littell is 3-2 with a 4.27 ERA over 52 2/3 innings between the rotation and bullpen in the minors this season.
