Rays' Wendle fractures wrist days after being activated from IL

April has not been Joey Wendle's month.

The versatile Wendle, who started Wednesday's game at second base for the Tampa Bay Rays, suffered a fractured right wrist when he was hit by a sixth-inning pitch from Kansas City Royals lefty Jake Diekman, according to Juan Toribio of MLB.com.

Wendle was playing in just his fourth game since being activated from the injured list after missing 17 contests with a hamstring issue. There is no timetable for his return.

The 28-year-old was 2-for-3 with a double on the day, giving him three base hits in two days after going hitless in his first six games.

Wendle was a surprise breakout for the Rays in 2018, hitting .300/.354/.435 with seven home runs, 61 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 139 games. He finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Brandon Lowe moved from first to second base when Wendle was removed from the game. Mike Zunino, taking over for Michael Perez behind the plate, replaced him in the batting order.
