Injuries for the New York Yankees continued to pile up Friday when the team announced catcher Gary Sanchez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain, retroactive to April 11.

Sanchez hasn't started behind the plate since April 8 and told reporters he was dealing with leg tightness Wednesday, according to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler.

He said he hopes to return immediately after the 10 days, Adler adds.

The 26-year-old was off to a hot start before hitting the IL, registering six home runs over his first 11 games while leading the Yankees with a .732 slugging percentage.

Sanchez only appeared in 89 games in 2018 due to a groin injury and underwent left shoulder debridement surgery last November.

Kyle Higashioka was recalled from Triple-A to replace him.

Miguel Andujar, Troy Tulowitzki, Jacoby Ellsbury, Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius, Dellin Betances, and Luis Severino are also on the Yankees' injured list.

CC Sabathia is expected to be activated from the IL to make his first start of the season for the Yankees on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.
