The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a contract with free-agent starter Clay Buchholz, sources told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Full terms are not yet known, but the deal is thought to be worth about $3 million with another $3 million in incentives, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. He adds the agreement is pending a physical.
Buchholz is coming off a strong comeback season with the Arizona Diamondbacks that saw him re-emerge as a solid mid-rotation starter.
After missing all but two starts in 2017 due to injuries, he caught on with Arizona last May and produced a sparkling 2.01 ERA (215 ERA+) and 1.04 WHIP over 16 starts. He averaged 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings during that span, his highest total in four years.
Buchholz is a veteran of the AL East, having spent the majority of his career with the Boston Red Sox. He's seen plenty of Toronto thanks to the Blue Jays' division rivalry with Boston and sports a 2.63 ERA with 73 strikeouts over 106 innings at Rogers Centre.
The 34-year-old owns a career 88-64 record with a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 985 strikeouts over 12 seasons with the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, and Philadelphia Phillies. A two-time All-Star with the Red Sox, he helped them win the 2013 World Series and tossed a no-hitter as a rookie in 2007.
Buchholz is the second veteran arm to join the Blue Jays on Wednesday, as Toronto also reportedly inked Bud Norris to a minor-league deal.
