Report: Harper won't consider short-term deal

Bryce Harper apparently wants long-term job security.

Despite the wishes of some teams - the San Francisco Giants reportedly plan to offer Harper a lucrative short-term deal - free agency's biggest available star won't even consider signing that type of contract, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

There's also skepticism among some parties involved in the Giants-Harper conversation that San Francisco can generate the kind of offer the slugger is looking for, reports ESPN's Buster Olney.

If the Giants fall out of the picture, the Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, and San Diego Padres would be left as the reported front-runners for Harper's services. All five clubs have been linked to the 2015 National League MVP at different points throughout the offseason.

For now, Harper is reportedly attempting to wait out fellow star free agent Manny Machado. In the meantime, he's apparently received an offer exceeding $300 million over 10 years from the Nationals, his former team, while the Phillies and White Sox are supposedly also willing to sign the outfielder for 10 years. In January, it was reported that Harper was seeking a record contract north of Giancarlo Stanton's $325-million deal signed in 2014.

Since debuting in the big leagues in 2012, Harper owns a .279/.388/.512 slash line with 184 home runs and 521 RBis across 927 games.
