Their sights are apparently set on 2020, but the San Diego Padres have checked in with the best of baseball's unsigned free agents, reports Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.

Those free agents include superstars Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, along with third baseman Mike Moustakas and super-utility player Marwin Gonzalez, according to Heyman.

While the Padres have previously been linked to Moustakas and Gonzalez, this is the first report of any contact with Harper or Machado, who are both still on the open market despite apparent interest from a number of teams.

Since Harper met with the Phillies in Las Vegas about two weeks ago, rumors involving him have quieted. Aside from Philadelphia's interest, the 2015 National League MVP reportedly has an offer north of $300 million on the table from the Washington Nationals, while it doesn't look like he'll sign with the Chicago Cubs.

Meanwhile, Machado appears to have an offer on the table from the White Sox, although the figure has ranged from $175 million to $250 million, according to reports. The 26-year-old also visited the Yankees in December and had a face-to-face meeting with the Phillies.

The Padres have been one of the most frequently mentioned teams in rumors this offseason, but so far they've been quiet, with the addition of second baseman Ian Kinsler and Garrett Richards as their most notable free-agent signings.

San Diego finished last in the NL West in 2018 with a 66-96 record, but possesses one of the deepest farm systems in baseball and has first baseman Eric Hosmer on the books for another seven years after he signed last offseason.
