The Texas Rangers signed free-agent right-hander Shelby Miller to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal will pay Miller a base salary of $2 million and includes up to $3 million in performance bonuses, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. The bonuses are tied to the number of days Miller spends on the Rangers' active roster and his number of innings pitched, Passan adds.

"We see this as a chance to add a relatively young, power pitcher to the staff. Healthy now after rehabbing last year, we think Shelby has more in the tank, and are excited to see him work with our staff this year," general manager Jon Daniels said, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

Miller, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017, passed his physical and the team expects him to be healthy for spring training, Rangers executive vice president of communications John Blake said.

An All-Star with the Atlanta Braves in 2015, Miller has only made nine big-league appearances over the past two seasons after undergoing Tommy John in May 2017. He was non-tendered by the Arizona Diamondbacks in November after posting a 10.69 ERA over five games (four starts) this past season.

Before his struggles in Arizona, Miller had been emerging as one of the better young pitchers in the game with both the Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals. He posted career-best numbers in ERA (3.02), strikeouts (171), and innings pitched (205 1/3) during his All-Star campaign in 2015, and before that helped the Cardinals reach the NLCS in three straight seasons, including their NL pennant-winning campaign in 2013.

Miller joins a revamped Rangers rotation that includes fellow free-agent signing Lance Lynn and Edinson Volquez, who's also recovering from Tommy John.

The 28-year-old Houston native owns a career 37-53 record with a 3.83 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 592 strikeouts over 714 1/3 innings across seven big-league seasons.
