New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes underwent surgery to remove bone calcification in his left heel on Friday, the team announced.
No recovery timeline was given, but the Mets hope to have Cespedes back for the second half of next season, reports Mike Puma of the New York Post.
The slugger said he will be able to begin baseball activities before advancing to a running program, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, who adds that Cespedes' running program likely won't start until March.
Cespedes underwent the same surgery on his right heel in August.
Having surgery on both heels at once would have left the 33-year-old bedridden for several weeks, Puma added.
Cespedes appeared in 38 games for the Mets in 2018, hitting .262/.325/.496 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs.
He's owed $58.5 million over the remainder of his contact, which expires at the end of the 2020 season.
