Chris Davis is heading to the record books for all the wrong reasons.
The Baltimore Orioles first baseman is not expected to play again for the rest of the season, according to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli. If true, the once-feared slugger would finish the 2018 campaign hitting .168 - the worst single-season batting average among qualified hitters of all time, per The Athletic's Dan Connolly.
Davis didn't just set the mark by a nose either - he cleared it by quite a wide margin. Among those to receive the required 502 plate appearances, Rob Deer (1991) and Dan Uggla (2013) previously shared the record at .179, according to Connolly.
Davis hit just 16 home runs this season and finishes with a -3.1 fWAR. The 32-year-old still has four years remaining on his contract with an annual base salary of $17 million.
