D-Backs' Walker left bloodied after taking fastball to face

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker had to leave Monday's game after he was hit in the helmet with a pitch in a scary incident.

During the eighth inning of Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Walker was struck in the cheek area by Kenta Maeda's 93-mph fastball, sending him to the ground.

Walker left the field under his own power with a bloodied face while accompanied by Diamondbacks trainers. He was replaced by pinch runner Steven Souza Jr.

The pitch actually struck the protective face guard attached to Walker's helmet, and it's very likely the contraption prevented a more serious facial injury. Arizona announced Walker sustained a facial contusion on the play and would undergo a precautionary CT scan, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

The 27-year-old Walker, now in his fourth major league season, entered Monday's game sporting a .174/.224/.413 slash line with three home runs in 36 games for the Diamondbacks.
