The San Francisco Giants' dwindling playoff chances appear likely to take a significant hit.

There's a strong chance that catcher Buster Posey will undergo season-ending hip surgery, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea.

"I'd say that that's a safe assumption," Giants executive vice president of baseball operations Brian Sabean told Shea.

"We talked about it. Nothing’s been determined yet," manager Bruce Bochy added. "Because we want him ready for next year. We're discussing that now."

Bochy also said the surgery would involve addressing the labrum and cleaning out bone spurs, while adding that specifics would be determined soon.

Until the team makes a decision, Posey will continue to play and is expected to appear for the Giants on Wednesday, Bochy told Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. The team is confident that Posey won't do further damage to the hip by playing.

Posey said he's known for months he needs surgery, according to Pavlovic.

The 31-year-old catcher is a six-time All-Star and was the 2012 National League MVP. He's hitting .286/.360/.386 with 22 doubles and 40 RBIs this season.

San Francisco entered Tuesday 7 1/2 games back of first place in the NL West and seven games out of a wild-card spot.
