New York Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. The expected recovery time is approximately six months, effectively ending his season before it began.
Ellsbury hasn't played since last year's ALCS against the Houston Astros when he was hitless in his lone plate appearance over two games.
The 34-year-old suffered a setback during his recovery in April and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in June. In addition to the hip injury, he's been dealing with plantar fasciitis, an oblique issue, and a nagging back problem.
Ellsbury has appeared in 520 games in four seasons with the Yankees since signing a seven-year, $153-million contract prior to 2014. Over that time, he's hit .264/.339/.386 with 39 home runs, 86 doubles, 16 triples, and 102 stolen bases.
He has two years remaining on his contract plus a $21-million team option ($5-million buyout) for 2021.
