It may have been a short week in Major League Baseball, but two players still managed to post gaudy numbers.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter was named National League Player of the Week on Monday following a phenomenal weekend at the plate, while Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor was given the honor in the American League.
Carpenter was already hot heading into the All-Star break, but he took things to another level during the Cardinals' five-game weekend set at Wrigley Field. The 32-year-old slashed .529/.619/1.706 and crushed six home runs, leaving the yard in four of the five contests. On Friday, he absolutely teed off on Cubs pitching, going 5-for-5 with three homers, two doubles, and 16 total bases in only six innings during a blowout win. He also managed to homer in six consecutive contests dating back to before the break.
Meanwhile, in Texas, Odor made the most of his abbreviated week with an epic series against Cleveland. He was nothing short of unstoppable, hitting .615/.571/.846 (8-for-13) with a homer, three RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases, while recording three multi-hit games - two of those being three-hit contests.
This marks the third career Player of the Week honors for both Carpenter and Odor.
