Alcides Escobar's biggest claim to major-league fame is over.
The Kansas City Royals gave the shortstop a day off on Sunday, ending his streak of consecutive games played at 421.
"I was proud about this streak, 421 straight games, that's not easy," Escobar said, according to ESPN. "I feel so happy I made that. I understand the situation right now. The team is looking for something different. Ned told me yesterday you have an off day (Sunday). I said I don't have any problems, do whatever you want."
Escobar had the longest active streak in the majors and had last missed a game on Sept. 25, 2015.
With Escobar's streak over, San Diego Padres shortstop Freddy Galvis enters Sunday holding the active record for consecutive games at 254.
Ironman Cal Ripken Jr. owns the all-time record, playing in 2,632 contests on the bounce.
