The New York Mets are in some trouble behind the plate.
In the span of two days, the team with the best record in the majors has lost two catchers to severe injuries.
Travis d'Arnaud was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a partially torn right UCL, and an industry source told the New York Post's Mike Puma that backstop Kevin Plawecki sustained a broken left hand after being drilled by a pitch on Wednesday.
Multiple sources confirmed Plawecki's hand is broken and he was placed on the 10-day DL by the Mets on Friday.
Catching prospect Tomas Nido was recalled from Double-A on Wednesday to take d'Arnaud's spot on the roster and it's likely the Mets call up veteran backstop Jose Lobaton soon as well.
Nido only has six games of big-league experience under his belt, however, and Lobaton hit just .170 in 51 games with the Washington Nationals last season.
The lack of catching depth could force New York to make a trade or sign a free agent. Veteran backstop Miguel Montero was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Wednesday and Puma speculated in his piece that Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto could be an option.
