Minnesota Twins first baseman Logan Morrison has seen plenty of stars over the course of his professional career. He came up in the Marlins' system alongside a gigantic young slugger named Giancarlo Stanton and spent two years in the AL West with Seattle, where he regularly faced off against Mike Trout.
But after getting an up-close look at Shohei Ohtani this weekend, LoMo's just about ready to crown him king of the diamond.
"There's another guy in that (Angels) clubhouse who is a really good player (Trout), but to me, with what he does on the mound and with the bat, (Ohtani's) probably the best player in the world," Morrison said Sunday following the Twins' 2-1 loss in Anaheim, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com.
Ohtani played in three of the Los Angeles Angels' four games against the Twins this weekend, excelling on both sides of the ball. In two games as a DH he teed off on Minnesota's pitching, going 3-for-8 with a homer and two RBIs; on Sunday, he carved up the Twins' lineup with 6 1/3 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball while striking out 11.
Ironically, it was Morrison who had two of the three hits Ohtani allowed, and he also worked him for a walk that finished the Japanese phenom's afternoon.
Still, the 30-year-old Morrison almost seemed to be in awe while trying to sum up his first Ohtani experience.
"He was really good," Morrison said. "He's only 23 years old and is going to get better. I think he's doing something that nobody has probably ever done and it might be a long time before you see it again."
