Danry Vasquez, the minor-league baseball player caught on video assaulting his then-girlfriend in a stairwell, says he's a changed man two years after the incident occurred.

The pitcher assaulted his former partner, Fabiana Perez, two years ago when he was a member of the Houston Astros' Double-A affiliate. Vasquez was released by the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday after KRIS 6 in Corpus Christi, Texas released a surveillance video that showed him striking Perez several times.

"This incident happened almost two years ago," Vasquez told El Emergente, as translated by the New York Post's Joshua Rhett Miller. "I've truly changed. I'm engaging in activities that have helped me change. I've matured as a person and I know what I did, or at least what was seen, which shouldn't be seen as an example or anything that can be amended."

Video of the assault attracted immediate attention from people, including former Detroit Tigers player and current Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, who reacted on Twitter.

Vasquez was reportedly arrested on suspicion of assault, but the case was dismissed once he fulfilled the requirements of his probation.

Perez did not want to press charges at the time. Since the footage was released, she's told Univision she regrets that decision.

"Now, when I watch the video, I remember things and I say: 'How could this have happened, why did I not do anything, why did I not react?'" the 21-year-old said, as translated by the Post.

Initial reports indicated Vasquez was still with Perez, but he is in fact now married to another woman.

Vasquez, 24, was signed out of Venezuela by the Tigers and made his professional debut for them in 2011. He never advanced past the Double-A level.
