The St. Louis Cardinals failed in their attempts to pry Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins, so they've pivoted to a number of other trade targets and free agents.
One coveted jewel might be Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson. The Cardinals have spoken with the Blue Jays at the winter meetings about a possible trade, though a deal isn't imminent, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
The Cardinals have been on the market for a power bat all offseason, and Donaldson would certainly fit that bill. Since 2014, only three players have more home runs than Donaldson.
One roadblock facing a Donaldson deal is the Blue Jays' desire to remain competitive. On Monday, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said "it's hard to imagine making (the Blue Jays) better without Josh," according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.
If Donaldson is a dead end, it still seems only a matter of time before the Cardinals get a deal done. They are reportedly the favorites to land Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna, and have been known to be in pursuit of a handful of Tampa Bay Rays players.
