Brewers prospect in critical condition after HBP transferred to Venezuela hospital
Milwaukee Brewers minor-league prospect Julio Mendez, who suffered a cardiac event after being hit by a pitch Aug. 26, has been transferred to a hospital in Venezuela at the request of his family, the Brewers announced Friday.
He remains in critical but stable condition.
"We continue to send our thoughts and prayers to Julio and his family in this very difficult time," Brewers general manager David Stearns said in the release.
Mendez, a 20-year-old infielder, was struck in the ninth inning of a game in the Arizona Fall League against the Los Angeles Angels' rookie-league affiliate. According to reports relayed by Baseball America's John Manuel at the time, Mendez was hit in the chest by a pitch and had to be revived on the field. The game was then called off due to emergency.
Mendez has been with the Brewers organization since 2014.
