Gibbons doesn't expect Travis to return for Blue Jays this season

Injuries may have prematurely ended Devon Travis' regular season for the second time in three years.

The Toronto Blue Jays second baseman has been out since June 4, a game he was forced out of early after being hit on the wrist by a pitch. That incident isn't what has sidelined him for over three months, however, as Travis underwent a procedure on his knee just days later after complaining of an sudden, inexplicable pain.

While Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins was optimistic in August that Travis could return before the end of the month - a prediction now nine days overdue - the club's skipper John Gibbons had a more pessimistic outlook, telling Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling he doesn't expect the oft-injured second baseman to play again this season.

Travis has struggled to stay healthy throughout his three-year career. In 2015, he was plagued with a nagging shoulder injury that led to the club shutting him down in mid-September after he played the final game of his campaign in July. Though he wasn't shut down early last season, a bone bruise in his knee - the same right knee currently bothering him - kept him off of the club's roster for the American League Championship Series.

Toronto may have some positive news to look forward to, though. Regular starting backstop Russell Martin, who's been on the disabled list since Aug. 12 with an oblique injury, could have a shot to return before the season is over, Gibbons said, according to Zwelling.
