Report: Cubs offered Schwarber to Tigers for Fulmer or Norris

The Chicago Cubs are on the hunt for pitching, and according to an earlier report from Peter Gammons of Gammons Daily, have their sights set on Michael Fulmer and Daniel Norris, two young starters currently pitching for the Detroit Tigers.

They also may have made a whopper of an offer to try and pry one of them away from Motown, as Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio revealed Tuesday afternoon. According to Bowden, the Cubs offered young slugger Kyle Schwarber to the Tigers for either Norris or Fulmer.

Bowden added that while the Cubs did inquire about Norris, it was Fulmer who they were particularly interested in.

It's unclear how far talks progressed between the two sides, if they did at all.

The report of Chicago potentially dangling Schwarber as a trade piece comes just a few days after FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the team's front office was considering doing "anything and everything" leading up to the deadline - including possibly dealing one of their bevy of young position players for a young, controllable pitcher.

The Cubs have struggled to repeat their successes of last October when they broke a 108-year championship drought, and entered the All-Star break tied for second place in the NL Central while sitting two games under .500.

Much was expected of Schwarber on the heels of his wonderful rookie year in 2015 and last season's shocking return from a torn ACL in the World Series; instead, the 24-year-old has slumped to a .178/.300/.394 slash line with 13 homers and 78 strikeouts. The Cubs sent Schwarber to Triple-A for two weeks in June, where he mashed four homers in 11 games before getting recalled.

Fulmer, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, leads the Tigers in most pitching categories this season and will make his first career All-Star appearance Tuesday night. Norris, 24, owns a 5.29 ERA in 16 starts this season and is currently on the disabled list.

Both Fulmer and Norris are under team control for several more years and have not yet reached arbitration.

According to Gammons' initial report, the Cubs also asked Detroit about ace Justin Verlander, but were not willing to take on all of his nearly $70 million in remaining salary as part of the trade.
