Jon Lester was playing the long con.
The Chicago Cubs starter's struggles with throwing over to first base have been well documented throughout his career, including during last season's World Series, but St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham played with fire for too long Saturday.
After attempting to throw off Lester with a massive lead, Pham was eventually burned when the southpaw surprised everyone by actually throwing the ball over. According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat, it was Lester's first pickoff since Sept. 20, 2015, which also came against St. Louis.
In a short but loaded message, Lester capped off the rare play by staring straight into the heart of the Cardinals' dugout. Ice cold.
