Mattingly says he's never seen his iconic 'Simpsons' episode

Don't get mad at Don Mattingly if he doesn't get it when you tell him to "Trim those sideburns," alright?

Mattingly, the decorated former New York Yankees first baseman who now serves as manager of the Miami Marlins, has never actually seen "Homer at the Bat," the iconic Simpsons episode that he and several other MLB stars appeared on back in 1992, according to Tim Healey of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

And though he continues to receive 87-cent residual checks for his guest appearance as the unintentionally insubordinate first baseman for the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's softball team, Mattingly doesn't cash them, he said, just to mess with his accountant.

Still, while Mattingly might not get references to Mike Scioscia's bout of radiation poisoning or Ken Griffey Jr.'s nerve tonic-induced gigantism, "Homer at the Bat" remains one of the most memorable episodes in the show's legendary 28-season run, and is still a talking point for the other MLB stars who made cameos.

"Let me start by saying the episode we had on 'The Simpsons' is the second-most asked question when I'm out and about," Ozzie Smith, the St. Louis Cardinals legend and Hall of Famer, told MLB Network Radio last year. "The first one, of course, is: 'Can you still do the flip?' And the next one is the Simpsons episode."

"Nobody expected that this would take on like it has," added Steve Sax, the five-time All-Star who spent 14 years in the big leagues, eight of them with the Los Angeles Dodgers. "It wasn't exactly the iconic show - it was only three years running when we did it - so it was just great to do it, to be cast among those great guys. Some of the guys are Hall of Famers; I was excited just to be on the show with them. And then it turns out to be this longstanding, huge, iconic show now."
