Report: Boras trying to engage Rangers on Alvarez

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Super agent Scott Boras is trying to gauge the Texas Rangers' interest in potentially signing left-handed slugger Pedro Alvarez.

As it stands, the Rangers still appear to be heavily interested in bringing back Mike Napoli, sources told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, though talks are expected to carry into February.

Aside from Joey Gallo and Shin-Soo Choo, there isn't a lot of left-handed pop in the Rangers lineup. In his lone season with the Baltimore Orioles last year, Alvarez belted 22 homers in just 109 games, while also slashing .249/.322/.504.

It's unclear how interested the Rangers might be, but signing Alvarez would set off a ripple effect within the organization.

As it stands, Ryan Rua is slated to play first base, with Gallo at DH. Jurickson Profar, who's only chance to play would be at first base, would be buried even further on the depth chart.

In that case, the Rangers would be forced to trade one of the above in order to presumably bolster the bullpen.
