Astros fan starts fundraiser to buy out Gomez

One Houston Astros fan has had enough of Carlos Gomez and he's taken to the internet to show his displeasure.

Andrew Collins, a longtime supporter of the club, started a GoFundMe page Monday night seeking donations to help the team buy out Gomez's $9-million contract. The outfielder is hitting a paltry .221/.279/.345 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs since being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers at last season's trade deadline.

"I just really don't like Carlos Gomez, man," Collins replied to the Houston Chronicle's Greg Rajan when asked why he started the page. "As far as being a fan goes, I think he showboats way too much and underperforms. I think he has all the tools to be a gifted athlete. He just can't get his (stuff) together. I don't think he fits on the team, either.

"He's got a cannon (for an arm) he can't control. He's really quick, but takes terrible routes. The Astros lost that game (Monday) because he took a terrible route. He gets burned by balls that go over his head every three games."

Collins had raised $25 of his $9-million goal as of Tuesday afternoon, but spreading awareness of Gomez's ineffectiveness seemed more important to him then actually raising the entire amount.

"I know I haven't gotten any money put into that page," Collins said with a laugh. "But I really didn't expect anybody to throw any money into it. It was more of a joke than anything."

Gomez's batting average (.209) and on-base percentage (.275) are both career lows and he's striking out in 31 percent of his plate appearances.
