The Boston Red Sox have placed outfielder Rusney Castillo on outright waivers, sources tell MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
Castillo was once again optioned to Triple-A on Friday, and with a $72.5-million contract, a viable suitor might prove difficult to find.
He's owed more than $11 million in each of the next three seasons and also has an option for over $14 million in 2020. If a team wants to take a chance on him, they'll have to take on his contract, too.
After getting a shot last season, Castillo batted .253/.288/.359 in 80 games while hitting five home runs. This year he's only appeared in nine games, getting eight at-bats.
This season, he's hitting .245/.304/.320 at Pawtucket.
