Giancarlo Stanton was unable to slug his way out of a prolonged slump at the plate Thursday, but boy did he ever try.
Stanton's only batted ball in play Thursday - an inning-ending double-play ground ball in the eighth - resulted in the hardest hit ever recorded by Statcast over its brief two-year history. The 123.9-mph ground ball came on an 80-mph offspeed pitch from Twins pitcher Phil Hughes.
The Statcast record books notwithstanding, Stanton's night was another dreadful one, as the Miami Marlins slugger struck out four times in five at-bats to watch his batting average plummet below .200.
Stanton's last homer came on May 24, and he has just three extra-base hits over the last calendar month.
