La Liga set to broadcast Friday matches free of charge on Facebook

Cable-cutting fans of Spanish football rejoice, you'll now get to watch Friday La Liga matches free of charge.

The Spanish top flight and multimedia communications company MEDIAPRO announced a move Friday that will see La Liga matches aired on the league and Gol's Facebook pages.

Supporters of Granada and Real Betis won't have to wait long either, with La Liga slated to broadcast Friday's match at the Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium.

"La Liga and MEDIAPRO are taking a step further in their permanent commitment for innovation and new consumer formats," the league's statement read, courtesy of ESPN FC.

"It's a commitment for innovation as part of the strategy of the digital development of La Liga with the aim that every Spanish football supporter can enjoy it."

Friday's announcement coincides with La Liga chief Javier Tebas' initiative to make the league more marketable in hopes of closing the rift between the Premier League and Spain's top flight.

The Premier League earns €2.3 billion more in television revenues than La Liga, prompting Tebas to say, "If we don't bump up our TV ratings, the value of the product will drop because the stars will leave."

"If we don't (grow in the next four years), the Premier League will be like the NBA and La Liga like the ACB (Spain's top basketball league)."
