Toronto FC signed Italian winger Federico Bernardeschi on a free transfer Friday.

The former Juventus player inked a contract through 2026.

Bernardeschi occupies one of the two Designated Player spots Toronto opened up when it dealt former MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo to Inter Miami and terminated Carlos Salcedo's contract.

"Having met with Federico a couple of weeks ago, we think he's a great fit for what we're trying to build here at TFC and look forward to getting him on the field," Toronto FC head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley said.

"He's an attacking player who is also known for working hard for the team. Federico's a left-footed player who's comfortable playing on the right wing but can also slide into a central position when needed."

Bernardeschi's contract with Juventus expired June 30. He recorded eight goals and 12 assists over five Serie A campaigns with the Bianconeri. The 28-year-old was a member of Italy's Euro 2020-winning squad.

It's been a busy few weeks for the Canadian club. Former Genoa captain Domenico Criscito recently made his debut with the Reds, while ex-Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne is hoping to make his maiden MLS appearance July 23.

The Reds also added midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye in a blockbuster deal with the Colorado Rapids.

Toronto is 5-4-11 in its first season under Bob Bradley, trailing Charlotte FC by seven points for the East's final playoff spot.
