Gattuso steps down as Fiorentina boss 3 weeks after appointment

Gennaro Gattuso's Fiorentina reign is done after a little over three weeks.

The 43-year-old was appointed head coach of La Viola on May 25 - less than 48 hours after his spell in charge of Napoli ended. However, that arrangement is already over due to tension between owner Rocco Commisso and Gattuso over Fiorentina's strategy and resources in the transfer market, according to Italian media sources that Agence France-Presse cited.

"ACF Fiorentina and Mister Rino Gattuso, by mutual agreement, have decided not to follow up on the previous agreements and therefore not to start the next football season together," the club wrote in a statement. "The company immediately set to work to identify a technical choice that will guide the Viola team toward the results that Fiorentina and the city of Florence deserve."

Fiorentina finished 13th in Serie A last season following a calamitous campaign that included two managerial stints for Giuseppe Iachini. They haven't placed higher than 10th for three consecutive seasons.

Gattuso oversaw AC Milan before he was appointed Napoli boss in December 2019. The club finished seventh and fifth in Italy's top flight during his time at the helm.
