Djibril Cisse announces retirement from football
Djibril Cisse, whose colourful haircuts have graced many different grounds across the planet, is hanging up his cleats.
On Monday, a teary-eyed Cisse, 34, announced his retirement from football on French television, telling Canal+, according to the Guardian: "The body says stop, now it's over. I can't practise high-level football."
He also took to Twitter on Tuesday and wrote: "A big thank you to you guys for your messages. They really do touch me. I hope that God will work a miracle so that I can return to football one day."
Cisse, without a club since he wrapped up an 18-month contract at SC Bastia last season, kicked off his career in 1998 at Auxerre and went on to play for the likes of Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers. His five years at Anfield saw him pocket a Champions League title in 2004-05 and FA Cup glory the following season.
Back in May, Cisse admitted to having second thoughts about retirement and said that offers from Major League Soccer, India, and Poland were on the table. Those proposals unfortunately never came to fruition. He'll retire from football with 12 different clubs, 41 international appearances, and a myriad of eccentric haircuts to his name.
