Spurs' Lloris has ligament damage in elbow, not expected back until 2020

Hugo Lloris is unavailable for the rest of the calendar year after suffering ligament damage in his elbow during Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper fell awkwardly as he palmed the ball to Neal Maupay after three minutes. The incident gifted Brighton their opener and resulted in the early introduction of Lloris' deputy, Paulo Gazzaniga.

"The findings have shown that although surgery will not be required, our club captain has suffered ligament damage and is not expected to return to training before the end of 2019," Spurs wrote in a statement Monday.

"Hugo is currently in a brace and will now undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation under the supervision of our medical staff at Hotspur Way."

The injury means Lloris will also sit out France's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Iceland, Turkey, Moldova, and Albania in October and November. Marseille veteran Steve Mandanda is likely to replace the 32-year-old between the sticks.

Spurs, meanwhile, will turn to Gazzaniga for the remainder of 2019. Mauricio Pochettino's side has endured a disastrous week featuring a 7-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich and Saturday's setback to Brighton.
