Max Verstappen claimed the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday despite starting from ninth and increased his championship lead over teammate Sergio Perez.

It's the fifth straight race win for Red Bull and the reigning champ's third victory. Perez, who has a pair of wins, including last weekend's Azerbaijan GP, crossed the line second after securing pole position Saturday.

This also marks the fourth 1-2 finish of the year for Red Bull through five races. The lone exception was the Australian GP: Verstappen won, but Checo finished fifth.

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso rounded out the podium, finishing third in the Aston Martin. The 41-year-old started the race from second and secured his fourth podium of the year.

Verstappen, who's won the championship in consecutive years, now has 119 points, while Perez is in second with 105. The Dutch driver claimed an extra point in the standings by taking Sunday's fastest lap.

"It was a good race," the 25-year-old said following the race. "Stayed out of trouble at the beginning. Picked the cars off one by one.

"Winning a race from P9 is always very satisfying."

Verstappen also won the inaugural Miami event last year.

Mercedes secured some key points Sunday, with George Russell finishing just off the podium in fourth and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton crossing the line sixth.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz placed between the two Silver Arrows in fifth, while Charles Leclerc went seventh.

The pair of Alpines led by Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon went eighth and ninth, respectively. Haas' Kevin Magnussen rounded out the points in 10th.

While Alonso performed well, his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll struggled after qualifying 18th on Saturday, finishing the race out of the points in 12th, behind AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda.

Rookie Williams driver Logan Sargeant, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, failed to impress in his first home race, finishing last.
