Sunday's race will mark the first time the 22-year-old Canadian will start from P1 in his Formula 1 career. Jacques Villeneuve was the last Canadian to accomplish the feat in 1997.

McLaren's Lando Norris qualified 11th but dropped to 15th for failing to slow down under yellow flags, while teammate Carlos Sainz placed 13th but was dropped to 16th for impeding Racing Point's Sergio Perez. Williams' George Russell also fell to 20th because of a grid penalty.
