A day after Angel Di Maria launched a scathing attack on Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager said the Argentine hasn't taken responsibility for his own failings at Old Trafford.

Di Maria provided a blunt account of his time with United in an interview with BBC Sport on Friday, blaming the coaching staff's indecisiveness for his failure to make an impact during his 12-month stay in Manchester.

Di Maria cited being asked to play multiple positions as the primary reason for his lack of success. Van Gaal responded by saying the 28-year-old, like many modern football players, has failed to take responsibility for the adversity he faced.

Van Gaal, however, suggested the 28-year-old - like many modern football players - has failed to take responsibility for his performance.

"I have never seen (many) players who look at themselves, who look to the way they have performed," Van Gaal told reporters ahead of United's match Sunday against Everton.

"It is always the fault of the manager. So he is one of the players who are in a row of players who have no self-criticism. Unfortunately it is my life as a manager. It is always like that."

Di Maria began his criticism of United by pointing out that the team is in the same, mediocre position today as it was when he played for the club.

He added, "I started a game in one position, then the next game in another. I scored goals playing in one position, then suddenly the next game I was picked to play in a different position. I think this also didn't help me settle."

Since joining Paris Saint-Germain last summer, Di Maria has registered nine goals and set up 11 assists en route to helping the team capture its fourth consecutive league title.
