Chelsea icon John Terry is leaving after 18 years with the club.

The much-heralded Blues skipper announced Sunday that Chelsea will not be renewing his contract, and, as such, the 35-year-old England defender is looking abroad to wind down his career.

Here is a timeline remembering the highs and lows of Terry's legendary career in west London:

October 28, 1998: Terry makes his Chelsea debut

At 17 years old, Terry made his Chelsea debut late in a 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

January 13, 2001: Terry scores first Premier League goal

Terry scored his first Premier League goal in dramatic fashion against bitter rivals Arsenal with a 62nd-minute header that helped secure a 1-1 draw at Highbury:

June 3, 2003: Terry earns his first England cap

Terry earned his first England cap in a friendly match against Serbia and Montenegro, replacing Gareth Southgate at halftime.

August 15, 2004: Terry is apppointed Chelsea captain

New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho named Terry his first captain, succeeding Marcel Desailly for the honour.

April 30, 2005: Terry lifts his first Premier League title

Terry lifted his first Premier League trophy when Chelsea defeated Bolton 2-0 to win its first Premier League title in 50 years. One calendar year later, on April 29, 2006, Chelsea repeated the feat and Terry lifted the Premier League trophy a second time.

August 10, 2006: Terry is named England captain

A new manager for England meant a new captain, so when Steve McClaren took over in 2006, he appointed Terry as his skipper, replacing the iconic David Beckham for the honour.

May 21, 2008: Terry misses a penalty in the Champions League final

I walked forward to take it knowing that it was there to be won and it was all down to me. What happened next will haunt me for the rest of my life.

It was, perhaps, the lowest point in Terry's 18-year career.

Who can forget this infamous missed penalty, one that cost Chelsea the Champions League in 2008? Manchester United would win the title and Terry would remain forever scarred from this monumental mistake.

January 30, 2010: Terry involved in sex scandal

In late January, Terry was thrust under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as reports of an affair emerged between himself and the wife of his Chelsea teammate, Wayne Bridge.

Bridge demanded to leave and was quickly sold to Manchester City. On February 27, the two met in the Premier League, and this iconic moment was captured on film, as Bridge refused to shake Terry's hand in the pregame formalities.

February 5, 2010: Terry is dropped as England's captain

England manager Fabio Capello stripped Terry of the captaincy as a result of his off-field conduct in the Bridge scandal, giving the armband to Rio Ferdinand.

May 19, 2012: Terry lifts the Champions League trophy

Chelsea wins its first Champions League title, defeating Bayern Munich in penalties. Terry was red-card suspended for this match and couldn't actually play, but showed up in full kit to raise the trophy once Chelsea secured the result.

September 27, 2012: Terry punished for racial abuse

Terry received a four-game ban and a fine on this day for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

May 10, 2015: Terry breaks a scoring record

Terry scored his 39th goal in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool and surpassed David Unsworth as the highest-scoring defender in Premier League history.

This record came in a year where Terry was mostly being written off but he proved his doubters wrong, and, resurgent, he guided Chelsea to another Premier League title.

January 31, 2016: Terry announces he is leaving Chelsea

Following a 5-1 win over MK Dons, Terry announced he is leaving Stamford Bridge. With four EPL titles, five FA Cups, three Capital One Cups, a Champions League, and Europa League title to his name, he departs the Premier League as one of the most decorated defenders in English history.
