Nottingham Forest dismissed head coach Ange Postecoglou around 20 minutes after Saturday's 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea ended.

Postecoglou lasted just 39 days at the helm, losing six and drawing twice during his brief spell in charge.

"Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect," the club statement read.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who made the controversial decision to part with Postecoglou's predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo on Sept. 8, wasn't in his seat with a quarter of the match remaining, according to Agence France-Presse.

Chelsea won at the City Ground with second-half goals from Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto, and Reece James. The result put Forest in 17th place in the Premier League table and at risk of falling into the relegation zone once the weekend's fixtures are over.

Forest finished seventh last season under Nuno.

Postecoglou expressed confidence during the press conference ahead of the Chelsea match that he could turn Nottingham Forest's fortunes around.

"Maybe I'm a manager that if you give them time, the story always ends the same," Postecoglou said Friday. "At all my previous clubs, it ends the same - with me and a trophy."

The 60-year-old won the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur last season, ending a 17-year trophy drought at the club. However, the north London side still axed the Aussie after placing 17th in the Premier League - its worst top-flight finish since the 1976-77 campaign.

Postecoglou won silverware with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Celtic before joining Tottenham.

Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, Fulham boss Marco Silva, and Sean Dyche, who has overseen Burnley and Everton in the Premier League, are potential candidates to replace Postecoglou, BBC Sport reports.
