Schalke stud Max Meyer has thrown his future with the Gelsenkirchen side into question after turning down a contract extension amid reported interest from Tottenham, which reportedly considered a £38-million bid for the player a summer ago.
Fresh of a starring role with Germany's Under-21 Euro-winning side this summer in Poland, Meyer has admitted that he is not actively seeking out a transfer, though the four-time capped Die Mannschaft attacker did add, "Let's see what happens."
"I declined the (contract) offer because I was not satisfied with my personal situation," the 21-year-old attacking mid told Bild, courtesy of the Evening Standard. "I just saw no chance to develop. It would have been the wrong step, however, because the overall situation has changed."
Refreshingly candid, Meyer, who joined Schalke in 2009, concedes that he's leaving all of his options open.
"I am completely open on my future. Let's see what happens. It is not the case that I will definitely go," he offered. "I never said I would change clubs - let alone this summer - I just did not renew the contract."
Tottenham has yet to dip into a frenzied summer transfer period despite the reinforcements added by the north London lot's Premier League top-six foes, and after Mauricio Pochettino short-listed Wilfried Zaha, Ross Barkley, and Meyer during last January's window, it's likely the Argentine gaffer is still monitoring the Schalke star's status.
The Bundesliga side is no stranger to selling its best players, and after seeing Joel Matip and Sead Kolasinac make Premier League switches on free transfers, Die Knappen will want to avoid losing another emerging talent sans fee.
Schalke kicks off its 2017-18 Bundesliga campaign with a visit from RB Leipzig on Aug. 19, and Meyer is quick to reiterate his current commitment to the mid-table Germans, saying, "I am really looking forward to the new season and I am happy to be here."
