Any doubts that Liverpool wantaway Christian Benteke was on the verge of making the Crystal Palace switch have been quelled by Eagles boss Alan Pardew.

Pardew confirmed Friday that the Croydon side had offered Benteke a footballing lifeline, and said the sides were but a medical and personal terms away from smashing the club's transfer record.

"He'll have his medical today but personal terms have to be done. We've agreed everything with Liverpool," Pardew told reporters ahead of Saturday's trip to Tottenham.

Desperate for a striker on the heels of an underwhelming season highlighted by a dismal attack, Benteke fills a massive need for Palace. Four Eagles were joint top in scoring last campaign on five goals each, and only one of them, Connor Wickham, is a forward.

Pardew has been tasked to find a proven Premier League striker this summer. Winger Andros Townsend arrived from Newcastle for a then-club record £13-million fee, and now it would appear that the south Londoners can check another box off their shopping list.

"Benteke is someone I know very well as I wanted to take him to Newcastle," Pardew said. "It just didn't work out for him at Liverpool."

Hoping to bounce back from a 15th-place finish and brush with relegation, Pardew and Co. have been in the market to bolster a lacklustre squad for the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.

The club bid adieu to mainstays Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie earlier in the summer window, and if Pardew's comments are any indication, Palace is looking to reinforce further before the Aug. 31 deadline.

"We've lost Mile and Yannick - both big figures at this club," Pardew said. "We need to replace them with others."
