Morikawa, Schauffele share PGA Championship lead

The final round of the 2024 PGA Championship is shaping up to be must-see TV.

Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele are tied atop a stacked leaderboard through 54 holes at Valhalla.

The hometown favorite Justin Thomas - a native of Louisville, Kentucky - and Tony Finau headline a group of six players still in the hunt at 10-under par.

Other notables hanging around include Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim, Jordan Spieth, and Hideki Matsuyama at 8-under par.

Shane Lowry stole the show Saturday with his 62, which tied the lowest round in major championship history. The mark has only been reached five times at majors, but it's the second instance this week after Schauffele did so Thursday.

Schauffele is seeking his first career major. He's been in the hunt multiple times but has often come up short, finishing T-2 at the 2019 Masters and the 2018 Open Championship and T-3 at the 2019 U.S. Open. He ran into trouble around the green on the par-4 15th, leading to a double-bogey, but that stood as his only score worse than par on the day.

Morikawa, the 2020 PGA Champion and 2021 Open Championship winner, is looking for his third career major in just his 18th start. A victory on Sunday would make him the fastest player to three majors since Tom Watson in 1977, besting Spieth (19), Tiger Woods (20), and Brooks Koepka (20).

DeChambeau, meanwhile, vaulted up the leaderboard with a dramatic chip-in for eagle on 18 to close out his round.

"Exhilarating," DeChambeau said of his eagle, per Golf.com. "Haven't felt like that in a long time. The last time I felt that way was when I shot 58 at Greenbrier."

Notably absent from the leaderboard is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who sits T-24 at 7-under par after carding a 73 on Saturday. It marked Scheffler's first round over par since Aug. 26, 2023, snapping a streak of 41 straight rounds of par or better. Scheffler was arrested on multiple charges related to a traffic stop before his round Friday.

"I definitely did not feel like myself today," Scheffler said after his round Saturday, according to The Associated Press.

Koepka also fell out of contention by carding a 74 on Saturday, putting the reigning champion 4-under par for the tournament.

The largest final-round comeback by a winner at the PGA Championship is seven strokes.
